This short length of motorway of about 7½ miles is part of the trunk route from Glasgow to Stirling. The all-purpose A80 road from Glasgow had been converted to dual carriageway up to Ingliston at the northern end of the Denny by-pass by 1970. Authority was sought to extend the route as motorway up to the M9 and powers were also taken to up-grade to motorway standard the dual carriageway between Cumbernauld and Ingliston. An extension to the motorway to Glasgow, started with a Stepps by-pass.
In April 2009 work started on the completion of the M80 to motorway standard, and details can be found on the M80. Stepps By-pass and extension to Haggs page.
